Brigid ~ one of the most cherished and revered Goddesses of all time. A pagan favorite, a christian saint.

We, as modern women, find it easy to identify with her- more so than any other goddess in antiquity.

She is a healer, a mother, a gardener (of apples and herbs), a poetess, a midwife, a protector of children and livestock and a very sympathetic deity to the plights of her followers.

A fire goddess. A giver of light and warmth but like fire.... volatile. A goddess that carries a hammer and commands the power of the flame, is not one that you want to upset. lol

We as women in todays society, are mothers, gardeners and healers. We are sympathetic but, unlike in generations past, we have a mighty voice! We are not afraid to speak up for what is right. We protect our children with the "might of the hammer", but nurture them in times of illness.

Modern women wear the many faces Brigid.

In my interpretation of Brigid...I tried to capture all of these aspects. The divine feminine, mother and hardened warrior.

May she bring you a light of hope during the dark and dismal winter months.

"Kamakhya"- greeting card.

A vision of the divine, Tantric mother goddess. Her name means "She who is the form of desire". The Kamakhya temple in India has a spring inside which flows red for three days in June. Immediately after this period, there is a festival celebrated for four days. Throughout the night, the temple dancers move in frenzied trance. Starting slowly to the beat of drums, the dance reaches a crescendo when the dancer is said to be ultimately possessed by the Mother Goddess herself.

"The Goddess Nephthys ~ Guardian of the Dead" - A mini print of the original painting by Emily Balivet, 2014.

Nephthys is an Egyptian Goddess symbolized the transitional nature of death. In one Egyptian myth she helped her sister Isis collect the scattered limbs of Osiris to reconstitute his body. In her funerary role she was considered a fearsome but necessary companion, assisting the dead through the different levels of the afterlife.

The Fool is the first card (the wild card) of the Major Arcana in the Tarot. It portrays a wild, optimistic youth setting about his journey. He is innocent and has an eagerness and freshness about him. He wears horns on his head and skins symbolizing his animalistic, instinctual drives. His outlook is free of preconceptions. The white dog warns him that he is about to step over the cliff, but the Fool trusts in life and maintains an absence of fear. He represents the curious and exuberant childish aspect in all of us.

"The Goddess Macha and the Unkindness of Ravens" An 11x14 print of the original painting by Emily Balivet, 2015.

Macha is an Irish war Goddess, strongly linked to the land. She is an aspect of the triple Goddess known as the Morrighan along with her sisters Badb and Anu. All three could take the form of crows or ravens, and would fly over battlefields, choosing who would die and who would live. They would then take the souls of the deceased in their black wings, flying them off to the Otherworld.

"Meditrina" A 16x20 poster print of the original acrylic painting by Emily Balivet, 2009.

The Roman goddess of wine, Meditrina, Daughter of Apollo. She was the deity in charge of wine, longevity and health... so concerned with our well-being that some say the word "medicine" came from her name. Every Oct. 11 in honor of the new vintage, a festival called Meditrinalia was celebrated. When the season's harvest was in and its first wines made, revelers would mix new wine with old, drink a copious amounts and pour a little onto the earth for the gods and goddesses.
