The Dance of the Seven Veils is thought to have originated in Assyrian and Babylonian mythology and depicts the Goddess Ishtar's descent into the underworld. At each of the seven gates into the underworld, Ishtar must remove one article of clothing. When she finally passes the seventh gate, she is naked. The dance can be interpreted as highly sensual and erotic or one with deeply spiritual and metaphysical meaning - The shedding veils representing earthly matters passing away to reveal the true, enlightened Self.
