The heroine Joan of Arc, was a peasant girl born in eastern France who claimed divine guidance and visions from God instructed her to recover her homeland from English domination She said the voices commanded her to aid the Dauphin, Charles, in his fight against England and Burgundy, and to see him crowned as the King of France. She was the tender age of 16 when she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War. She was eventually captured, brutally tortured and interrogated over many months, tried by an ecclesiastical court, and burned at the stake when she was 19 years old.
