"Barley Witch" - An image of the original painting by Emily Balivet.
Like so much familiar, modern-time holiday symbolism, the witch on her flying broomstick has a fascinating and often overlooked history. It is believed to have come from an ancient agricultural fertility rite where women would rub a mixture of psychoactive herbs over their bodies. This "flying ointment" produced visions and encouraged astral projection. The women would then jump around their fields with a broom between their legs with the intention of showing the crops how high they'd like them to grow :)
