The Holly King is the lord of Winter woods, ruler presiding over the waning (death)year. A darker twin to the Oak King. The two are dual aspects of the Horned God battling for the favor of the Goddess.
At Midsummer (also known as Litha and Summer Solstice- circa 06/21), the Holly King slays the Oak King to rule over the winter months. The days start getting shorter....the nights are getting colder....mother nature shuts down for a winter slumber. We say farewell to the sun.
At Midwinter (Also known as Yule and Winter Solstice- circa 12/21), the Oak King returns and is victorious in this bout. The days start getting longer and warmer. The earth begins to wake up from its slumber....and green begins to envelope the earth. We welcome in the return of the sun.
Both are symbolic to an eternal dance of fertility, growth, death and rebirth and the turning of the wheel.
