"Barley Witch" - A print from the original acrylic painting by Emily Balivet, 2009.
Printed on acid~free, archival quality smooth stock, the image measures 15" x 12" with a .5" white border allowance for framing. Signed and dated on the back by the artist, the print is sealed in a protective cello sleeve and shipped flat.
Like so much familiar, modern-time holiday symbolism, the witch on her flying broomstick has a fascinating and often overlooked history.
It is believed to have come from an ancient agricultural fertility rite where women would rub a mixture of psychoactive herbs over their bodies. This "flying ointment" produced visions and encouraged astral projection. The women would then jump around their fields with a broom between their legs with the intention of showing the crops how high they'd like them to grow :)
